Effective Trauma Informed Therapy for Healing Attachment Issues
Attachment Injuries
Attachment injuries often manifest as feelings of insecurity, lost intimacy, and a profound lack of trust. They complicate relationships and one’s ability to connect and bond with others. As a developmental form of trauma, the healing process often involves the same mechanisms of exploring and dealing with underlying pain. Attachment injuries do not develop out of nowhere and are typically related to specific, sometimes one-time events.
Types of trauma and stress-related disorders include:
- Infidelity
- Abuse or neglect
- Pregnancy or miscarriage
- Traumatic brain injury
- Medical diagnosis
- Falling short of expectations
- Dismissive behavior
Attachment injuries often go back to childhood, involving instances of parental abuse or neglect during crucial developmental periods. Such cases are described as attachment trauma. However, attachment injuries can also happen later in life when a partner, family member, friend, or significant person violates or undermines expectations.
How Does Therapy Help With Attachment Injuries?
Part of the healing process utilizes the therapeutic bond between client and therapist to provide validation and showcase an observable example of a supportive relationship. During therapy, we will address unresolved emotions and problematic thinking patterns. For example, although someone hurt them in the past, it does not mean that someone will do so in the future. Clients also learn how to effectively express their emotions and form close emotional bonds with others.
